The «Cascada da Bernina» Waterfall Trail

«Cascada» means waterfall in Romansh. Over more than two hundred meters in elevation, the mountain stream Ova da Bernina» plunges down toward the valley floor. Alongside this rushing natural spectacle, visitors to the waterfall trail can also discover impressive feats of engineering. The hike leads up to several waterfall viewing platforms, accompanied by spectacular views of the Bernina Massif. Along the way, the Rhaetian Railway negotiates tight curves and historic viaducts—remarkably, all without the use of a cogwheel system.
The route to the waterfalls is ideal for leisurely walks starting from Pontresina and Morteratsch, as well as a scenic section of the Via Valtellina, a long-distance hiking trail that follows the historic muleteers’ route.
